Building Thumbs, Flora Thumbs by Neolight Building Thumbs, Flora Thumbs by Neolight
Some visual development for a cartoony CTF level in UDK.

The top are different refinery / spawn bases and the bottom is just a bunch of plant and rock buddies.

If you want to get into game dev, no better time to start your journey than right now.

The picture above is the third step of the creative process. You will need to follow all steps, in order, giving each step your full attention if you want to make a great scene.

1 - Write out your subject matter. What is the narrative? What are you depicting? What are your influences? Don't get hung up on this stage, but write enough to get some kind of feeling or idea in your head as to what you want to make.

2 - Gather tons of reference in a reference folder. Use google images, deviantart, etc to find images that reflect parts of the idea you wrote out in step 1. I spend at least two hours filling out my folder for these big projects, and I don't ever stop looking for more while making the scene.

3 - Thumbnail. This is what this deviation is. Take half a day or more to draw out the spectrum of ideas. Everything and anything that comes into your head. Don't worry about making good drawings, just ones that get you excited.

4 - Use the best ideas among your thumbnails to make a final, nicely rendered painting.

5 - Move on to 3D. This is a whole other category with all kinds of steps and processes.

Go forth and make something.
